Principal Consultant – AI Engineering

Associate | remote / work from home | Auckland region preferred We’re looking for an outstanding Principal Consultant to lead client engagements in the AI engineering space. You’ll work alongside our clients technology teams on complex, high-stakes AI product development engagements using AI engineering techniques to improve quality and delivery outcomes. You’ll lead teams of engineers and consultants, helping improve ways of working and the products they deliver.

This is a senior, externally-facing role requiring deep technical credibility in agentic AI and a track record of winning and delivering complex AI engineering engagements. You will be responsible for client outcomes, team performance, commercial results and contributing to pipeline growth through your professional network.

A picture of you

You build with AI, not beside it. You have designed and shipped agentic systems where models reason, plan, use tools and act autonomously in production environments. You understand where agents fail, how to make them reliable and why prompt engineering alone is not an architecture.

You have experience facilitating the learning and change needed for individuals and teams to get the most out of applying AI tools and techniques.

You bring a network that includes decision-makers at technology and transformation-heavy organisations and are comfortable using those relationships to open doors for HYPR’s AI engineering practice. Business development is part of how you operate.

Your role – the headlines

Principal Consultants are accountable for outcomes across three pillars of our Delivery Operating Model.

Happy Client

You’ll scope engineering challenges, design architectures, write proposals and deliver or oversee delivery to exceptional outcomes. You’ll also manage client relationships at C-suite and senior leadership level, with a particular focus on organisations navigating the shift from AI experimentation to products running in production.

Happy Team

You’ll form and lead delivery teams, ensuring they’re engaged and effective and maintain strong working relationships with client teams at every level.

Happy Finances

You’ll develop engagement financials, manage the scope of work, and identify and handle improvements. You’ll also contribute directly to pipeline growth – sourcing leads, progressing opportunities and supporting proposals through your professional network and market presence.

Beyond engagements…

  • Maintain deep, current knowledge of the AI landscape: frameworks, patterns, tooling, failure modes and emerging standards
  • Mentor HYPR consultants on AI-native delivery approaches
  • Contribute to HYPR’s market positioning through thought leadership – writing, speaking and professional networking
  • Keep CRM updated with pipeline activity, lead tracking and market intelligence
  • Report to the Chief Engineering Officer and/or CEO on engagement progress

The experience and skills we’re after

Agentic AI – non-negotiable

  • Hands-on experience designing and shipping agentic AI systems in production: multi-agent orchestration, tool use, memory and context management, evaluation and reliability
  • Familiarity with leading agentic frameworks and patterns (eg. LangGraph, AutoGen, custom orchestration layers)
  • Ability to assess feasibility, viability and architectural trade-offs for AI-native solutions – not AI features bolted onto existing systems
  • Experience with retrieval-augmented generation, AI workflow automation and integrating AI systems into enterprise environments

Technical depth

  • Deep understanding of cloud infrastructure and/or software delivery in AI-heavy contexts
  • Understanding of distributed systems, their constraints and how they interact with AI workloads
  • Familiarity with contemporary organisational structures that support AI-native delivery (eg. Team Topologies)

Commercial and network

  • An existing professional network in technology, financial services or adjacent sectors with a track record of leveraging it commercially
  • Comfortable contributing to business development: scoping, proposals, client presentations and relationship management
  • Experience managing client relationships at C-suite and senior leadership level

Position

Flexible, remote position. Preference for candidates located in the Auckland region. Occasional travel to client engagements required.
