Senior Software Engineer

Posted by Vicky Price . May 12.26

Associate | remote / work from home | Auckland region preferred We’re looking for outstanding Senior Software Engineers to work on client engagements in the AI engineering space. You’ll work alongside high-calibre technology teams on complex, meaningful transformations building systems where AI is the core of what gets delivered. We care about finding great people who are intellectually honest, technically rigorous and genuinely collaborative.

We offer...

  • Purpose-driven, values-led consulting practice with a real commitment to work-life balance
  • Competitive remuneration for Associate contractors
  • Remote-first work environment; occasional on-site presence required for client engagements and team connection
  • Exposure to a fast-learning environment where you’re exposed to hard problems, excellent engineers and real accountability
  • An engaged, stable team – most Associates have been with us for years

A picture of you

You build with AI natively. You have shipped systems where models do real work – reasoning, planning, using tools and acting in production – not just generating text as a helper function bolted onto existing code. You understand why agentic systems fail and how to make them reliable.

You’re a self-starter. You can assess what is needed, find where you fit and make a valuable contribution without waiting to be directed. You take ownership of problems right through to completion.

You value collaboration and knowledge sharing. Cross-functional teams make sense to you because you understand why they exist. You want to know not just that something works, but why and are willing to challenge your own understanding to get there.

Your role – the headlines

  • You understand client organisations from their technical to their non-technical challenges and contribute meaningfully to solving them
  • You design, build and ship AI-native systems – agentic workflows, tool-using models, automated pipelines and AI-integrated products
  • You work across the full delivery lifecycle, from architecture to implementation to production observability
  • You learn, experiment and teach, staying current with the fast-moving AI engineering landscape and bring that knowledge back to the team
  • Mentor and support less experienced engineers on HYPR’s and the client’s teams

The experience and skills we're after

AI – non-negotiable

  • Hands-on experience designing and shipping agentic AI systems in production: multi-agent orchestration, tool use, memory and context management, evaluation and reliability
  • Practical understanding of where agents fail – reliability, latency, prompt fragility, hallucination in pipelines – and how to address it
  • Familiarity with leading agentic frameworks and patterns (eg. LangGraph, AutoGen, custom orchestration layers) and when to use or avoid them
  • Experience with retrieval-augmented generation, AI workflow automation and integrating AI systems into enterprise environments

Software engineering

  • Strong hands-on engineering fundamentals within autonomous, cross-functional delivery teams
  • Proficiency in at least one ubiquitous language with polyglot tendencies – you pick up new languages and tools quickly
  • Cloud infrastructure: AWS and/or Azure, infrastructure as code (Terraform, Ansible), CI/CD
  • Containerisation: Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift
  • Monitoring and observability
  • Automated testing: TDD, integration and end-to-end
  • Event-driven microservices and emergent architecture patterns

Current stack (subject to change)

We work with TypeScript, Node/npm, React, GraphQL, Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift, Terraform, Ansible, AWS and Azure. This list reflects today’s engagements. What’s most important is that you adapt quickly and can assess trade-offs across technologies.

Position

Flexible, remote position. Preference for candidates located in the Auckland region. Occasional travel to client engagements required.
